A behavioral psychology study has shown that many men react more strongly to the phrase "we need to talk" than to some other threats that are imagined as scary.
According to researchers, this is related to the anxiety created by uncertainty and the anticipation of a difficult conversation or conflict in a relationship.
In a three-week study of 142 men, participants showed increased heart rate, cortisol (the stress hormone) levels, and emotional distress when they heard phrases related to relationship problems. Many of them immediately thought of negative scenarios, even though the actual conversation hadn't even happened yet.
The researchers concluded that emotional uncertainty and fear of conflict can cause more stress than clear, predictable situations. According to them, people often react more strongly to something vague than to a concrete problem that they know exactly.
