Renowned Albanian director Leka Bungo has passed away at the age of 81, following a heart attack. The news of his passing was confirmed by his family in a statement on social media.
Leka Bungo was born on February 28, 1944 in the city of Vlora. He was one of the most important names in the Albanian artistic scene, with a wide contribution to theater, cinematography and television. He began his studies in acting at the “Aleksandër Moisiu” school and later attended a specialization course in directing at the Higher Institute of Arts.
During his career, he contributed as a director to the "Bylis" theater in Fier and then to the State Stage, where he brought to the stage plays with social content and pronounced satirical elements. After the '90s, he founded the private theater "Rubairat" near the National Theater, an attempt to bring new life to Albanian theater, although this project did not have a long life.
In 2002, he emigrated to the US, but did not leave the art world. Leka Bungo is the author of several plays and film scripts, such as “Pabesia” and “Pas fasadës”. The public also remembers him for his performance as Bardhyli in the 1990 film “Një đalja edhë një gajës”.
