The layoffs also affect the media giants and this is one of the reasons
Not just Silicon Valley. The American winter is bringing a storm of layoffs even in the big newsrooms. After CNN, staff cuts affect Vox, Buzzfeed, the Washington Post and other US media giants.
According to a study published by Peë Research Center in 2021, foreign newsrooms have progressively reduced the number of employees, going from 114,000 to 85,000 journalists between 2008 and 2020. And the decline has been even more pronounced in the local press.
But how did we get to this point?
Gianni Riotta, director of Datalab and editor of La Repubblica says it's all about the absorption of technology by the sector.
"Blaming change, instead of embracing it, has always been a grave mistake. Publishers and journalists fail to understand that the enemy is not technology, but traditional storytelling. Simply reporting is no longer enough, there is a need for added value," he says.
