Video/ Georgian deputies are beaten in the parliament

Georgian politicians have clashed in parliament and the debate has degenerated into violence.

Lawmakers from the ruling party aimed to advance a controversial "foreign agents" bill and this has fueled the debate.

Mamuka Mdinaradze, the leader of the ruling party was punched in the face by the opposition MP Aleko Elisashvili.

The incident sparked a wider tussle among some lawmakers.

After this moment, the leader of the opposition Elisashvili was greeted with cheers by the protesters against this law who had gathered outside the parliament.

Georgian Dream said earlier this month that it would reintroduce legislation requiring organizations that accept funds from abroad to register as "foreign agents" or face fines.

The bill has strained relations with European countries and the US, which have said they oppose its approval. The EU, which granted Georgia candidate status in December, has said the move is incompatible with the bloc's values.
