New York City to introduce parking fees for downtown vehicles

New York City officials have imposed a fee for cars entering the city center - the first such measure in any city in the United States.

Car drivers will pay $9 per day, and the fee will vary depending on the vehicle and traffic schedule.

Entrance will be charged to the Central Park district, and the part visited so much by tourists, around the Empire State Building, near Times Square, and the financial district - Wall Street.

This scheme aims to reduce New York's massive traffic problems and raise billions of dollars for the public transportation network, although it has been heavily criticized by New Yorkers, including US President-elect Donald Trump, who has vowed to end the scheme when he officially takes office this month.

Taxi company associations have also had major objections.

Last year, New York City was named the city with the most congested urban area, for the second year in a row.

Cars in downtown Manhattan were driving at speeds of 17 kilometers per hour during peak traffic.
