Trump demands increased contributions from NATO partners: Countries that do not

US President-elect Donald Trump is calling on NATO partners to significantly increase their defense spending. Instead of two percent of their gross domestic product (GDP), partner countries should invest five percent, the Republican said at a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. During the election campaign, the Republican threatened NATO countries that did not pay their contributions that he would not support them in the event of an attack by Russia.

The future US president had signaled during his first term as president that the US would withdraw from NATO if European countries did not increase their defense spending. All countries could afford this increase from two to five percent, Trump said.

President-elect Trump also stated that he did not rule out using the military to take control of the Panama Canal or Greenland.
