Spanish beaches popular with tourists have been closed after large sharks were spotted swimming near the shore.

Beachgoers were told to stay out of the water at Melenara Beach in the Canary Islands when a police drone spotted a three-metre shark.

Last month, tourists and locals were banned from entering the sea after a shark was spotted on a beach on the island of Menorca.

The police said that the beaches will be kept under surveillance until "the situation is resolved".

According to Spanish news channel Antena 3, shark sightings are common off the coast of the Canary Islands.
