After the assassination, the Slovak prime minister is out of danger for life

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico is no longer in critical condition after his assassination.

Deputy Prime Minister Tomas Taraba told the BBC that the operation went well and that Fico will survive.

Fico, 59, was seriously wounded in the stomach and one arm in an attack in the small town of Handlova, shortly after leaving a meeting at a cultural center.

A well-known writer has been arrested as the suspect of the incident. Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estoka described this as a politically motivated assassination attempt.

Fico is a controversial figure in the EU because of his calls to end military aid to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

But condemnation of his shooting has come from far and wide and has been described as an attack on democracy.
