The WHO calls for a ban on foods with a high salt content

The World Health Organization has called on countries to set legal limits on the amount of salt in processed foods, restaurants and canteens as part of a series of recommendations to curb excess intake and reduce the rate of heart disease.

As stated, almost all countries in the European region, 51 out of 53, have an average daily salt intake above the recommended maximum, which is five grams per day.

This poses serious health problems because excessive salt consumption is one of the main causes of high blood pressure, or hypertension, which is the biggest risk factor for cardiovascular disease, according to the WHO.

"The greater the reduction in salt intake, the greater the reduction in blood pressure: reducing salt intake can reduce mortality from cardiovascular disease and the occurrence of heart attacks," said the WHO European Office in a statement.
