Meteor passes over NYC, disintegrates over midtown Manhattan

A meteor passed over the Statue of Liberty in New York before disintegrating about 46 km above midtown Manhattan on Tuesday morning.

"The meteor, traveling at 54,717 km/h, followed a steep trajectory and passed over the Statue of Liberty and disintegrated 46 km above Midtown Manhattan," said a NASA Facebook post.

According to NASA, residents reported feeling a tremor and hearing a loud explosion as a result of the meteor that passed over New York around 11:15 a.m.

At the same time, New Yorkers reported seeing a ball of fire shoot across the sky and felt the ground shake slightly under their feet.

The American Meteorological Society said many eyewitnesses reported seeing green, yellow and white light in the sky for about 30 seconds before the meteor broke into three pieces.

NASA estimates that the "bright orb of light" was first spotted about 40 miles (64 km) above New York's Upper Bay, where the Statue of Liberty is located.

There are no reports of damage or injuries related to the event, while as for the reported shaking, experts do not believe that it is related to the meteor or any other natural phenomenon.
