Brazil bans cell phone use in schools

Students in Brazil will no longer be able to use their cell phones at school after Congress approved a bill aimed at raising awareness among young people about the harmful effects of screens.

More than half of children in Brazil between the ages of 10 and 13 have their own cell phone. This percentage rises to 87.6% for adolescents between the ages of 14 and 17.

According to data from Brazil's internet commission, almost two-thirds of schools in the country have adopted restrictions on the use of mobile phones, but 28% prohibit their use completely.

The bill, which covers students from 4 to 17 years old, was approved by the Senate and now needs to be ratified by Lula.

The law allows the use of electronic media only for educational or accessibility purposes.

82% of parents in Brazil agree with banning cell phones in schools, according to a survey.
