Biden paves the way for Mark Rutte to lead NATO
Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte is a contender to be the next head of NATO. The United Kingdom and President Joe Biden are backing the Dutch prime minister to succeed Jens Stoltenberg, who is expected to resign in October.

Biden's support is likely to sway more allies to embrace Rutte. Two-thirds of NATO countries are supporting Rutte's nomination to lead the military alliance, writes Politico.

Rutte's path to the role of secretary-general puts him on a collision course with Russia, as the alliance fights back against Vladimir Putin's aggression two years since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. And if former President Donald Trump returns to the Presidency, the Dutch leader will have to deal with Republican skepticism towards NATO and collective security.
