Antonio Tajani is elected chairman of Forza Italia instead of Berlusconi

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani was elected president of Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia (FI) party today at the party's congress in Rome.

Tajani served for a long time as the right-hand man of former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, Ansa reports.

"I am happy, I feel a great responsibility on my shoulders, because it is not easy to wear the captain's armband when Silvio Berlusconi wore that armband, I will do my best, I will try to involve as many people as possible in the movement and I will also think a lot about the local administrators", Tajani said.

Roberto Occiuto, Alberto Cirio, Deborah Bergamini and Stefano Benigni were elected Tajani's deputies.

Berlusconi served three terms as prime minister and died in 2023 at the age of 87.
