Albania is one of the economies with the highest savings rate in the Region. It is estimated that bank deposits are approximately 74% of the country's Gross Domestic Product. According to the latest data from the Bank of Albania, the total deposits in the Albanian banking sector in November 2022 was 1.51 trillion ALL, an increase of 8.8% compared to the same period a year ago.
Household deposits continue to be dominant in the total structure, with about ALL 1.2 billion or 80% of the total. However, the annual growth of household deposits until the end of November was lower than the average growth, at 7.2%.
Last year, the growth of bank deposits slowed somewhat, due to the negative effect of high inflation on savings.
On the other hand, part of the depositors preferred to move their savings towards more profitable alternatives, mainly bonds and treasury bonds of the Albanian government. In the first phase, the increase in interest rates was followed at very fast rates in the market of bonds and treasury bonds.
