Fire at hotel in Turkey kills 66 holidaymakers, injures 51 others

A fire that broke out in the early hours of Tuesday at a hotel in the Kartalkaya ski resort in Bolu province, Turkey, has killed 66 people and injured 51 others. Mobile phone videos captured the harrowing scenes, with visitors tying sheets to climb out of windows while others screamed for help. Two of the victims were killed after jumping from the building in panic, the governor said.

The Bolou prosecutor's office immediately launched a judicial investigation, assigning six prosecutors and a five-member team of experts to determine the causes of the fire.

According to Turkish media, 4 people have been arrested as part of the investigation, including the business owner.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed his deep regret, assuring that the investigation will continue without interruption to determine responsibility. The fire coincided with school holidays, a time when many families visit the ski resort for winter activities. There were 234 people in the hotel at the time of the incident.
