What is the PISA test and who it has ranked as the best students in the world

The results of the first PISA study to be conducted after the Covid-19 pandemic were published on Tuesday. Around 690,000 pupils aged 15 and 16 were tested in 81 countries. Compared to previous research, performance has declined in most countries. Almost all the first places are occupied by East Asian countries, together with Estonia.

Estonia has scored the best result in Europe.

What Pisa Test?

The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is an international study by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which aims to evaluate education systems by measuring the academic performance of 15-year-old students in mathematics, science and reading. It was first conducted in 2000 and then repeated every three years. Its purpose is to provide comparable data with the aim of helping countries to improve their education policies and outcomes.

What the report found

The report found that the international average maths results fell by most of a school year, while reading results fell by most of half a year, meaning students struggle to perform basic calculations or interpret simple texts.

The success of Asian countries

Asian countries follow the most upward trend, with Singapore leading in maths, reading and science. The report suggests that Singaporean students, on average, are almost three to five years ahead of their peers. Other Asian regions that stand out include Macau, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea.

On an interesting note, the report also examines student well-being, finding that academic success does not always correlate with happiness. In Singapore, Macau and Taiwan, where students excel in mathematics, limited participation in extracurricular activities such as sports is often reported." Conversely, countries with lower PISA scores, such as Spain and Peru, show "lower levels anxiety" and "greater focus on sports."

How Albania ranked

In mathematics, Albania received the evaluation of 368 points out of 472 possible points. From the evaluation of the progress of female students in mathematics compared to the PISA 2018 program, Albania has a drop of 69 points, the highest among the 80 countries tested.
