Lushnja, Divjaka, Roskoveci and Konispoli have been selected as 4 pilot municipalities for the implementation of the project “Technical Assistance for Improvement of Performance, Monitoring and Assessment of Urban Spill Irrigation, a project funded by the World Bank in the framework of the Large Water Resources Project and Irrigation that is being carried out in Albania.
The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Bledi Çuçi, signed the agreement with the mayors of these four municipalities. In attendance were also representatives of the World Bank and the consortium that is implementing the project. During his speech, Minister Çuçi said that Albanian agriculture has been developed in recent years also due to the many investments that have been made to rehabilitate irrigation and drainage infrastructure.
“The figures speak for themselves. We have already 240 thousand hectares of land all over the country that irrigate thanks to the rehabilitation of irrigation canals. Now we are entering the phase that we should use these resources as efficiently as possible, ” said Minister Çuçi. The latter also called on the new mayors of Albania to elect a special deputy mayor who would deal only with issues of agriculture and rural development.
With the implementation of this project in the 4 pilot municipalities, the aim is to create good management models of irrigation, which will then be implemented in all the municipalities of the country. The Water Resources and Irrigation Project is one of the biggest investments ever made in irrigation and drainage in Albania, worth about 56 million Euros.
Fortunately we already have a Irrigation and Drainage Strategy, prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, with the technical assistance of the World Bank-funded project. The operationalization of the irrigation system at the farmer level remains one of the important challenges of this project. / Tiranapost.al.
