The leader of the democratic party of Albania, Lulzim Basha took to Facebook on Thursday to share details from the meeting with NDI (National Democratic Institute) Director for Central and Eastern Europe, Robert Benjamin. Only a transitional government can guarantee free and fair elections, said Basha in his post, adding that the united opposition is determined to put the country’s assets in the best interests of the citizens.
” With the Director for Central and Eastern Europe of the American Democratic Institute NDI, Mr. Robert Benjamin we discussed the political crisis in the country, the solution for free and fair elections. Before becoming a member of the European Union, Albania must have a transitional government that guarantees free elections. This way, the pressure on voters and the administration, the misuse of public funds and state assets and the role of people with criminal records and criminal groups will be annihilated. Separating politics from crime is vital to a free vote.
I expressed the opposition’s concern in regard to delays in the establishment and functioning of SPAK and BKH, which will investigate crime and corruption at high levels and the determination of the Democratic Party and the united opposition to put the country’s assets and extraordinary human potential to good use, instead of in the hands of a handful of corrupt authorities and oligarchs.
With the valuable assistance of the United States, we will be able to turn Albania into a functioning democracy. Representatives of the Democratic Institute confirmed their readiness to contribute to the resolution of the crisis and strengthening of democracy”, wrote Basha on Facebook.
