Negotiations / DW unveils German MPs’ plan for Albania

The CDU / CSU in Germany will determine in September the position regarding the EU-Albania negotiation process. There will be consultations in Berlin next week, which the Albanian prime minister is expected to attend.

In a recent publication Deutsche Welle has written that according to sources from the CDU / CSU circles in Berlin, come next week, the PMs of the largest group in the Bundestag will intensively deal with Albania’s case, looking for a position for the opening of negotiations. The Christian Democratic and Christian Socialist MPs from the Western Balkans working group, headed by Johann David Wadephul (CDU), CDU / CSU Parliamentary Working Group (CDU), as well as European Union and external affairs working groups will be involved in the process. Over the next week, they are expected to meet with representatives of both the German government and Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama. The latter is expected to arrive in Berlin next Friday (13.09).
It seems that a large part of the CDU / CSU MPs are keen on giving Albania a “Yes! with conditions ”, but there is also a small but strong minority who think that Albania is not ready yet. In addition to the conditions already formulated regarding judicial reform, the fight against corruption, organized crime and drugs, electoral reform, more conditions will be added, such as clarification of the legality of the June 2019 local elections, as well as clarification on allegations of vote buying in some areas.
The final decision of the CDU / CSU group is expected on September 24th. The stance of the CDU / CSU should be the same as that of the German government and the SPD coalition partner. The latter, and the Foreign Ministry headed by SPD, have long been in favor of an immediate start of negotiations with Albania. If the parties manage to unify their positions, the vote is expected on September 27, during the Bundestag plenary session. / DW / Tiranapost.al
