Meta changes the subject: I am concerned that the visa regime for Albania will be reinstated

Editorial Essence / Although this is not possible because all countries need to vote in regard to the visas, and the Netherlands are a needle in a haystack, President Meta has shifted attention from this subject by not saying anything in regard to the internal crisis.

    18 JUNE 2019

DECLARATION BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF ALBANIA, MR. ILIR META

The President of the Republic, Mr. Ilir Meta has closely followed all discussions in regard to the progress of the European integration process of Albania.

While all attention has focused on a possible positive decision to open Albania’s EU accession negotiations, the President notes with deep concern the risk of the re-establishment of the visa regime for Albania.

Following the submission of the Netherlands request in regard to the suspension of visa applications, to the European Commission, yesterday’s announcement of the Commissioner for Immigration, Home Affairs and Citizenship, Dimitris Avramopoulos, who warned stricter measures against Albania, alongside Venezuela and Colombia, was alarming for all.

I urge all responsible state institutions to pursue this issue, with absolute priority, as it carries a great deal of sensitivity for all Albanian citizens.

Visa-free movement has been one of the greatest achievements with a direct impact on the Albanians, as the people who have suffered the greatest and longest isolation in the region.

We all remember the long queues in front of the doors of embassies, with desperate people looking for a chance to see their children, relatives, the opportunity to study and travel abroad, etc.

I urge you to take all the necessary measures by not neglecting or bypassing any responsibility that would undermine and overturn this acquired freedom of the Albanians! / Tiranapost.al.
