Mayor Veliaj distances himself from Memorial at Lake Park

Editorial Essence/ The memorial of victims of the 2016 coup d’etat attempt in Turkey has sparked heated debate. Mayor of Tirana, Veliaj has reacted on Sunday.

On Sunday, the Mayor of Tirana Erion Veliaj, visited the headquarters of the Albanian Muslim Community, where he congratulated them on the Eid al-Adha holiday. During the visit, Veliaj commented on the issue of the memorial of victims of the 2016 coup d’état attempt in Turkey, placed by the Turkish Embassy near the Artificial Lake Park. Veliaj emphasized that there are over 50 spots in the area to commemorate various events or individuals, and urges people to calm down, as there has not been treason or a major event to panic over. “There are over 50 points in that territory where different events are remembered, and everyone is likely to be respected. I would say leave the dead in peace, and whoever wants to pay their respects with a candle, a flower or a prayer, can do so, but leave them be. Generous Tirana has a place for everyone. So, for all those who are panicking, there is no treason, or betrayal or anything to panic over. The spirit of this holiday should be to focus on the things that unite us. There is room for everyone at the Lake and in all of Tirana. Happy vacations to everyone and enjoyed the holiday, ” Veliaj said./ Tiranapost.al
