Albanian women ministers send letter to Dutch MPs

Following the Dutch government’s skeptical stance on the opening of Albania’s EU negotiations, the women ministers of the ‘Rama’ government have addressed an official letter to the Dutch MPs, calling for the Dutch support for Albania’s EU accession talks, just days before the EC decision. The ministers in their letter also mentioned that there are undoubtedly ‘dark forces’ working against the country and the integration process.

“Eight out of the 15 ministries in the Albanian Government are held by women; as mothers and daughters, as women fighting for our families and for our country, we would like to raise with you a matter that concerns all of us, a matter that is of huge importance to all Albanians – our country’s European perspective.

We hope you understand how hard-fought a battle this is, it is a battle that we should and we will win, but we cannot win it alone. There are of course those who do not want us to win this battle. Alas, they include some in our country too.

A blow to our effort to start the accession talks is the biggest prize for these dark forces. We are simply asking that you join other nations of Europe in extending your hand to Albania and allow us to take our fight and our efforts to another level”, said the letter.

Nevertheless, the Netherlands has made its decision, and there is no way to know how much pressure or compassion such a letter will create. Even though, Albania deserves negotiations based on merit rather than compassion. Albanians are a European people and in all polls Albanian citizens respond like no one in the region in terms of a pro-European majority./Tiranapost.al
